Why Electrical Safety Matters
Electrical issues are a leading cause of home fires. Taking a few minutes to inspect your home can prevent disasters and protect your family.
The Safety Checklist
- Test GFCI Outlets: Press the 'Test' button on GFCI outlets in your kitchen, bathrooms, and outdoors. The power should cut off immediately. If it doesn't, the outlet needs replacement.
- Inspect Cords and Plugs: Check all exposed extension cords and appliance cords for fraying or cracking. Replace damaged cords immediately.
- Check for Warm Outlets: Place your hand over switches and outlets. If they feel warm to the touch, it indicates loose wiring or an overload. Call an electrician.
- Ensure Proper Bulb Wattage: Make sure all lightbulbs match the recommended wattage of the fixture. Using a bulb with too high a wattage can melt the socket and start a fire.
- Test Smoke Detectors: Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are hardwired properly and have fresh backup batteries. Test them monthly.
